The Under-qualified Critic (Entry #0)

Opposites Attract

It's not news that men and women are marketed to in vastly different ways, especially in the topics of blog entries. In lieu of the hot topic of the differences between men and women, we will be discussing two of the most popular blogs...The Cosmopolitan and GQ.

The Cosmopolitan has been a respected magazine for a century (seriously, google it). In its later years it has shifted to a more online forum, blogs, and women of all ages have become their target audience. They've maintained a respectful, professional yet personal tone throughout the majority of their articles that has allowed them to really connect with their readers. Women look to The Cosmo for advice, tips and tricks and relatable stories from other women. Many of the topics are based around family life, style, updates on celebrities, cooking, housekeeping and beauty. I'm sure we can all agree those are pretty spot on interests for majority of women around the world...I'll be the first to admit it.

On the flip side we have GQ, who has also been around for close to a century...crazy! Men have always been the targeted audience of GQ (the title literally means Gentleman's Quarterly). Similar to The Cosmopolitan, GQ has maintained a professional yet personal tone throughout their articles also allowing them to really connect with their readers. While their start was focused more on fashion and style, it has grown into sex, style and sports, with the occasional update on celebrities. No secret that these topics are more specifically for men than women.

Both blogs do a great job of maintaining the same format and style throughout, however the tones and themes are different. GQ has a light hearted tone to it while The Cosmo has a heavier tone in certain topics. They both do a great job of capturing their audience and catering to their target. Organization is consistent and makes each story easy to follow.

They say opposites attract, but do they really in this situation?

  5. Nice entry! I like the unique contrast of publications that compare how certain blogs and magazines are marketed towards a specific gender. I agree that publications now have switched to a more online forum as well.
